Kids Book Review ~ Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

I picked up Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes at a garage sale long before Hanna was born.  I didn’t realize what a fantastic book it was until much later.

Chrysanthemum is a cute little mouse with a very long name. She loves her name and thinks it’s perfect until she goes to school. The other kids make fun of her name ~they even threaten to smell her! chrysanthemum kevin henkes

This book does a great job of showing how Mom and Dad can be a great support system, how to love yourself (and your name) even when the kids at school are being mean. It also shows how things can change on a dime. In the end a special someone validates Chrysanthemum’s name and all the kids who’ve been mean to her change their tune.

This is one of Hanna’s favorite books (you can see it laying right next to her on the bed) and we read it regularly before bed.

While a great story is one thing ~ there are some other factors I consider when choosing books. Call me crazy but at the end of the day and with multiple books to be read I like a book that has a great story ~ but also a book that is easy to read, and doesn’t have so many words it takes a year to get through it.

While this is a pretty detailed story it is quite easy to read. It has quite a few words ~ I mean, there’s more than 2 words on a page, but it seems really quick to read for some reason.

The characters are fun, there’s some nice dialogue and the illustrations are quite nice.  If you’re looking for a book your little one will like chances are Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes will do it!

You are so right about Chrysanthemum. A simple story with a lot to it. AND one that can be read again and again. Glad to see your daughter is surrouned (literally) by books. Thanks for sharing!
